Jon Sweeney, a research scientist based at Natural Resources Canada’s (NRCan) Atlantic Forestry Centre in Fredericton has recently been studying the beetle diversity on P.E.I.. With his team, he collected beetles using pheromone baited funnel traps between 2018 and 2019 and identified hundreds of new beetle species new to PEI!

Hello I’m having problems with blister beetles in my garden in chipman new brunswick. I’m concerned about my family eating the produce from plants the beetles have been on including my wild blueberry plants. We are trying to build our gardens more each year into a future business in farming .but we have been fighting these beetles for 3years. My main concern is food safety after they have been eating and defecating on my plants…thank you

      Hi Judith,

A great place to go for some professional and amateur entomology help is by going to our Facebook page! (https://www.facebook.com/groups/165253103417). You will be able to get more visibility there and will may get a response from some local experts. The group is private, so once you request to join, you will have to be approved. If you do not have Facebook, you are welcome to contact me at mickyahn@gmail.com and I can relay the post to the group.

I need help! We have a cottage in Nail pond PEI and every July we are totally infested with black beetles. They fly around and fall. Once they land they don’t fly again. They start after a big heat. We have no idea how they get in the cottage. We have sprayed numerous times including having an exterminator come, and have tried a number of ways to get rid of them. I am talking about hundreds a night. They come at dusk. Many are dead by morning. We are really discouraged. Any ideas on how to get rid of them?

I can send photos if that would be helpful,

    Thank you for your time,

    Sincerely, Linda

The group is rather active and if you have photos from August that you can submit, a local entomologist may be able to identify it for you.
