Hello insect enthusiasts!

Insect Discovery Day will be held this year on Saturday, August 3rd, at the Coaldale Bird of Prey Centre (http://www.burrowingowl.com/visit/) in southern Alberta. The activities and information booths will be held between 10am-3pm.

Insect Discovery Day is an exciting event that introduces kids and community members to the wonderful world of insects. This event is designed to inspire kids (and adults) to have a better appreciation of insects and the natural world by having them not only view insect life but also be actively engaged in all aspects of insect collection.

Similar to previous years, there will be swab netting as well as aquatic insect sampling to help teach budding and amateur entomologists collection techniques! Along with activities, booths will be set-up to showcase local and exotic insects as well as a parasite booth hosted by members of the Host-Parasite Interactions group from the University of Lethbridge and the Agriculture and Agri-food Canada.

Come for the insects, stay for the birds! Access to the facilities gives you full access to the activities and info-booths on insects, as well as standard entrance to the Birds of Prey Centre.

The Alberta Birds of Prey Centre is Canada’s largest birds of prey facility. Situated on a 70-acre wetland area site our centre is a celebration of nature featuring the hawks, falcons, eagles and owls of Alberta. On display are dozens of birds along the Hawk Walk, as well as the opportunity to hold an owl or two yourself. Come watch flying demonstrations by trained eagles and handlers. And don’t forget the ducks! It’s always hard to say no to having the chance to feed ducks!
